Is American Wagyu the same as Japanese Wagyu?

If your American Wagyu beef is labeled ‘Fullbood,’ it is genetically identical to the Wagyu beef produced in Japan. If your Wagyu lacks the fullblood label, it is a hybrid of Japanese and European cattle. These modified forms of Wagyu beef were developed in the late 1990s as a way to produce something similar to authentic Japanese Wagyu in the face of export bans.
